The 7½-length romp landed his trainer Bryce Heys in the stewards room after his first city winner to explain how Major Major went from missing a place at Kembla Grange to a Randwick winner in seven days.

"He probably should have won both his runs and I always had this race in mind for him after the carnival," Heys said. "He was on the worst part of the track at Kembla, but I didn't think he would do that."

Major Major flopped out of the barriers and by the time he got going the rest of the field were six lengths away from him. At that point Major Major, which shortened from $10 to $8.50 in the ring, got to $25 on Betfair.

"I wasn't expecting that, he was just a bit causal out," apprentice Brodie Loy told stewards. "He wasn't slow, just a bit casual like me."

Loy tacked on to the back of the field and turning for home he pushed Soviet Courage out of the way.

"Josh Parr wasn't too happy with me for doing it but he was going too well," Loy said.

Major Major waltzed up on the bridle and went away to score by 7½-lengths from Four Carat and Soviet Courage.

Murrihy called Heys back into the stewards' room after hearing from Loy and told him "it is a bit hard to put a ban on him [because of barrier manners] when he goes on to win by seven. We will put a warning on him."

Heys added "that he has always been a bit of a slug out the barriers".

The questioning then turned to the performance as Heys admitted he had used an unorthodox training technique in stepping him from a mile to 2400 metres in seven days.

"He just kept getting slower and slower with every run – he was very dour. So we tried to get him here fresh," Heys said.

Stewards accepted it might have worked with some reservations.

"We probably could have lived with it if he had won by a length, but seven? He hasn't done you any favours with the handicapper," Murrihy said to Heys.

"He usually doesn't ran away from horse like that," Heys said.

"It is a good trait to have," Murrihy replied, getting in the final word.
