Mr Ward, who is also Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier for the Illawarra and South Coast, said rainfall had ranged from 80-100mm over the past 24 hours within the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.
Mr Ward said the NSW SES had responded to more than 10,000 jobs in the past 48 hours.
Three hundred of those jobs were in across the Illawarra, including Mr Ward's own electorate office, which required sand bagging.
Mr Ward thanked all the storm volunteers.
"I would like to thank them for their efforts under these challenging these conditions and to the staff in State Headquarters here in Wollongong and the many regional offices right across New South Wales who support them,'' he said.
“This is a multi-agency response so I would also like to acknowledge and thank the various other emergency services who are assisting the SES – Fire and Rescue NSW, the Police and the Rural Fire Service.''
He also reminded people to avoid driving through flood waters.
A search is still being conducted for car which was swept away in Maitland. The car contained two elderly women.
Mr Ward also inspected land slippage and restoration works from residences at Cathedral Rocks venue.
Update: 3.05pm: Kiama Council have reassured the community that while Jerrara Dam is on Amber Alert Level, there is no imminent danger to the dam or public.
A council spokeswoman said it was a requirement of Council’s Dam Safety Emergency Plan for the Dam that the SES advise property owners directly below the dam wall that the dam spillway is operating.
"Unfortunately the SES text message system used to advise the local property owners has inadvertently forwarded messages to other mobile phones outside this immediate area,'' she said.
"If you live outside the immediately affected area, and you have received one of these messages please disregard the information.'
UPDATE 11.30am: Residents around Jerrara Dam have been put on alert for possible evacuation as flood waters continue to rise.
Several road closures for roads on the Swamp Road side of Jamberoo. including Swamp Road itself, remain in place until further notice.
AN 80-year-old woman was evacuated from a home in Cathedral Rocks Avenue last night, due to fears of a landslide.
About 10pm on Tuesday police were advised a potential landslide risk to two homes on Cathedral Rocks Avenue.
Police from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command attended, evacuating an 80-year-old woman from one of the homes. The other home was not occupied.
The resident assisted by police. She was uninjured and is safe with relatives.
Train times and travel in the area may be affected, with trains not travelling between Kiama and Shellharbour Railway Stations.
UPDATE: According to the SES, Jerrara Dam has reached Amber Alert level.
For those residents downstream of Jerrara Dam, this alert means you should prepare to evacuate.
Residents should monitor the situation and be prepared to evacuate if instructed to do so.
If evacuation is required, a Dam Failure Evacuation Order will be issued by the SES.
Please wait for further instruction about when to evacuate and where to go.
