Wild weather warnings have been issued by Bureau of Meteorology to hit later today in the Illawarra and South Coast, as well as big, windy surf conditions.
For today (Monday, April 20) the forecast for daytime temperatures is between 11 and 16C with 70 per cent chance of rain becoming less likely this afternoon.
However, rain is predicted to hang about until Wednesday and possibly into Thursday and Friday, looking to clear up by the weekend.
Winds are currently southerly 35 to 45 km/h contributing to a prediction of dangerous and powerful surf conditions for this afternoon and evening.
These are expected to become hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, swimming and surfing.
A severe weather warning has been issued by the BOM for Illawarra, Hunter and Metropolitan, of damaging winds averaging 55 to 65 km/h with gusts to about 100 km/h later today and localised heavy rain.
Current conditions are reported to be due to a strengthening high pressure ridge over the southern Tasman Sea and a developing low off the NSW coast. This is expected to produce gale-force southeasterly winds along the central part of the coast later today (Monday, April 20).
The low is likely to deepen and move towards the Hunter or southern Mid North Coast during Tuesday with gale-force winds continuing and seas rising further.
The rain has already made travelling on roads a little slower than usual this morning with hold-ups on the Princes Highway in Kembla Grange and Figtree.
