When Kiama builder Jamie Pignataro went to work on September 4 last year, it seemed like just another day.
Then the 43-year-old had a massive seizure. He later learned that the cause was a tumour covering a quarter of his brain.
The next month followed with a craniotomy and the news that his tumour was grade three cancer. He is undergoing treatment.
Friend Melasande Carey said the situation left Mrs Pignataro providing their sole income.
The couple have two children; Ari, 5, and Eli, 9.
One of Mr Pignataro's goals was to complete renovation of their home and Mrs Carey is a member of a committee formed to help them.
The Jamie's Wish Fund-raising Committee hosted an event at The Pavilion, Kiama, last month.
Mrs Carey said the event attracted 260 people and that it was an "awesome night".
It raised about $50,000 in services and materials as well as about $40,000 in cash.
This included an anonymous donation of $20,000 of services for the house.
"People were so generous, it was just amazing," Mrs Carey said.
"To have everyone celebrating a fun night out, it was better than I could imagine, as they [the family] enjoyed it."
Meanwhile, a total of $2139 was raised from a recent event in support of another worthy cause.
Last August, Minnamurra's Hunter Hawken, 6, was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
DMD is caused by a mutation of a gene on the X chromosome, which provides instructions for production of the protein dystrophin.
This protein is located inside the muscle cell membrane. When it is absent, the muscle cells collapse and die and DMD develops.
Symptoms of DMD usually appear between two and five years and may include difficulty running, jumping, climbing and rising from the floor; frequent falls, enlarged calf muscles, toe walking and delays in language acquisition.
Weakness gradually progresses to include all skeletal muscles, the muscles of respiration and heart.
The Rock for Hunter event aimed to raise awareness and funds.
The concert took place at Dicey Riley's Hotel.
A garage sale at Albion Park Scout Hall on March 28 in support of Hunter raised about $1200.
