"There were a lot of things that had to be considered, including any possible negative effects on local businesses, but in the end what we are trying to achieve is to bring new people into the town, which will hopefully generate more business all round," she said.
Ms Warren said Kiama Council had been really supportive of the move.
The weekly Saturday markets, to be held from 8am to noon, will be run by local fresh food provedore Local Feast.
Local Feast co-owner Jessica Taylor said the supplier went out of its way to source as much of its produce from the local area.
"We buy produce from Greenbox, Dapto Community Markets and Sydney Markets, while planting is under way at three local properties, which will add to the variety of produce we will be offering," Ms Taylor said.
"It is worth noting that when we buy produce from the Sydney Markets, we go out of our way to select produce from farms in the south-west Sydney region."
The Saturday fresh food markets look like being just the first step in a bigger picture. This includes the possibility of a 25-stall full-scale market, possibly before Christmas, Ms Warren said.
