We've crunched the numbers, so if you have your heart set on making it to one of the sporting events of the year - and Michael Clarke's last one-day international - here's what you're up for.

Getting to Melbourne

If you don't live in Victoria then your wallet will take a big hit just getting you to the game.

A last-minute, one-way ticket from Sydney or Brisbane on Saturday night will cost between $325 and $540. It costs about the same to fly on Sunday morning, but you'll have to leave early to get to the MCG to see the first ball at 2.30pm.

Black Caps fanatics coming from Auckland are looking at $1191 for a direct flight with Emirates on Saturday, or about $1000 to fly to Sydney or Brisbane and then to Melbourne on Sunday morning.

If you're in Wellington, Virgin can get you to Melbourne for about $500 first thing on Sunday morning, but there aren't many seats left.

Booking a return ticket to get you to work on Monday will cost a bit less than double.

Demand from Kiwis crossing the ditch has been intense, with Air New Zealand organising a special charter flight for Sunday morning. Tickets sold out within an hour.

Accommodation

It might be time to reconnect with that long-lost cousin of yours, because finding somewhere to stay will be a nightmare.

With thounsands descending on the city for Sunday's final, most hotels are already fully booked and some are charging up to $810 more than normal rate.

The cheapest room left in the CBD for Saturday and Sunday is Travelodge in Docklands, which has a king room for two people for $769.

Other than that, you'll be forking out $1835 for a five-person suite at the Windsor or $1340 at the Sheraton.

Tickets

Then there's the small matter of getting a ticket to the sold-out cricketing event of the year.

There are options though: the International Cricket Council is reselling tickets for punters who can't make it to the game.

They're being snapped up fast though, and the only tickets available were going for $395 when Fairfax Media checked.

Less scrupulous fan might turn to scalpers. Tickets are selling on eBay for between $250 and $1299 each.

Incidentals

If you are going to spend most of Sunday at the cricket, you had better eat something.

The MCG's new pricing schedule is yet to come into place, which means you'll fork out $4.80 for a meat pie, $5.60 for hot chips, or $11.50 for a salad.

Organisers say they have 15,000 pies and 13,000 kilograms of hot chips ready for the hungry crowd, so there shouldn't be a shortage.

And if you feel like having a beer while you watch the match (as odd as that may sound), a plastic cup of mid-strength larger will set you back $7.10.
