On Wednesday, it was announced that a $1.6 million upgrade to the bridge at Panama Street, Bombo is now under way.
Kiama MP Gareth Ward said the upgrade is essential to maintain the structural integrity of the rail bridge, and the work means they can increase heights for vehicles to 3.8 metres, improving access to local roads.
Mr Ward said the funds came from Transport for NSW and were in the budget, meaning it wasn’t an election commitment.
He said it would improve the safety and security of the area.
“This project will also benefit the community by making it easier for locals to access to the beach,’’ he said.
‘‘Bombo is one of the most exceptional beaches on the South Coast, particularly for surfers, so to improve that access for them is also good news.’’
Mr Ward hoped works would be completed by the end of May.
There will be some changes for motorists and NSW TrainLink customers.
These include from May 4-15, whereby there will be no access to the beach via the underbridge; and from 10pm on Friday, May 8 until 2am on Monday, May 11 buses will replace trains between Wollongong and Bomaderry.
Work will be carried out during planned trackwork.
“Customers travelling to and from Bombo Railway Station during the work are advised to allow extra travel time due to local road closures,” Mr Ward said.
‘‘Road and pedestrian detours will be clearly signposted to ensure residents continue to have access to their homes and businesses.’’
