The seat of Shellharbour has been a Labor-held seat since its inception in 2007. Incumbent Anna Watson was preselected by the Labor party for the 2015 state election, after winning the seat in 2011 with 46.7 per cent of votes against rival Liberal candidate Larissa Malison (31.4 per cent).
These are the candidates in order of how they appear on the ballot paper:
- Greens candidate Peter Moran
- Hugo Morvillo (No land Tax)
- Anna Watson (Labor)
- Romeo Cecchele (Independent)
- Wayne Quinn (Independent)
- Mark Jones (Liberal)
- John Kadwell (Christian Democratic Party)
Big ticket election items include the Albion Park Rail bypass, Shellharbour Hospital upgrades and the Shellharbour City Hub proposal.
Liberal candidate Mr Jones announced a $550 million commitment toward the Albion Park Rail bypass which would be funded by the leasing of poles and wires scheme.
Labor’s Ms Watson pledged $30 million for an upgrade to Shellharbour Hospital which was later matched by Mr Jones’ $251 million commitment for major redevelopment later in the week.
Ms Watson also revealed plans to resurrect the Lake Illawarra Authority to manage the lake and to allocate $3.8 million for upgrades to Warilla CBD and Shellharbour Village.
Greens candidate Peter Moran along with the Liberal Party's Mark Jones declared the election effectively a referendum on the $57 million Shellharbour City Hub proposal -stating a vote for the ALP was a vote for the project.
First on the ballot paper is Mr Moran who lives in Shellharbour and is a Shellharbour councillor. His primary objectives are planning, youth unemployment, donation reforms and tackling corruption.
Blackbutt resident, Independent candidate Wayne Quinn is contesting his first election. If elected he will push for more funding for Shellharbour Hospital, more employment opportunities and better infrastructure.
Independent Romeo Cecchele is a Dapto resident and if elected will rally for “full funding” of the Fowlers Road Bridge Extension, restoring Dapto TAFE and building Dapto Public hospital.
Christian Democratic Party (CDP) candidate John Kadwell ran in the last federal election for the CDP member for Throsby and is focusing on Christian principals and the family unit.
No Land Tax candidate Hugo Morvillo lives in Smithfield, Sydney and the micro party propose an increase in the GST to compensate for the annual $2.4 billion revenue shortfall that would result from its policy to abolish land tax.
