The Kiama District Community Page is for community discussion, the sharing of ideas, offers of support, for friendship and ‘‘for all those things that make communities special’’.
Kiama Downs resident Anne Millard started the page earlier this month.
No business advertising is allowed, it is not a buy and sell site, and animals are not to be listed for sale or for free (although lost animal notifications are welcomed).
Mrs Millard said the page’s creation was motivated by conversations she had seen on buy and sell pages throughout the community, whereby residents were seeking information and referrals.
Mrs Millard said the recent widespread power outage throughout the Illawarra and South Coast was one such example, as many residents sought updates via social media.
She had contemplated starting such a discussion page, focusing on community topics, for some time.
‘‘It seems to me a lot of people turn to Facebook to get information about other things,’’ she said.
‘‘There needs to be a place to discuss these kinds of things.’’
Mrs Millard said the page was so far building due to word-of-mouth, as residents sought to discuss issues which affected them.
Mrs Millard had previously started Pay it Forward - Illawarra South Coast, a page for free items and service listings.
‘‘They are miniature communities online,’’ she said of this type of Facebook group.
‘‘It’s the engagement with other people that people enjoy.’’
