YEARS of residents’ lobbying appears to have paid dividends, after an announcement of funding for noise abatement works in Coryule Place, Kiama.

Residents of the street have been appealing for sound barriers which they say will provide relief from ‘‘very disruptive’’ highway noise, claiming their quality of life was being compromised by traffic noise emanating from the highway.
Residents had taken their cause to the state government, saying the noise attenuating works should have been included when the highway deviation was constructed.
The provision of a noise attenuating wall adjoining the Princes Highway and at the rear of the properties in Coryule Place was a project of major concern to them.
On Monday evening, Kiama MP Gareth Ward announced up to $1 million in funding for noise abatement works to reduce noise in Coryule Place.
‘‘This wasn’t an easy battle by any means, it took a lot of hard work which has finally paid off... It’s a real victory for our local community,’’ he said.
‘‘Proper noise abatement should have been constructed when the Kiama bypass was commenced in December 1983; however unfortunately this did not occur.
‘‘In particular, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Coryule Place residents John Blom, Robert Behl and Matt Robinson, whom I have met with on several occasions to hear their very genuine concerns.
‘‘This is not contingent on any other thing, other than it will be in the roads budget... Obviously I would hope to be in the next parliament, so I can assure that it does happen, but that obviously depends on what happens in the next 20-odd days.’’
Mr Behl was relieved, saying residents had been lobbying for the works for several years.
‘‘It’ll just make the quality of life for the residents here so much better,’’ he said.
‘‘At the moment we can’t even enjoy our backyards, you can’t have a barbecue.’’
Coryule Place resident John Blom welcomed the news.
‘‘The proposed works will help, particularly at night, when the trucks seem to start at about 2am, which if it becomes loud, can affect your sleep patterns.’’
