The camera shows degraded farm land and kilometres of barren, dry coastline where the sea used to be.

"The Adani power plant came in 2007," says Praveen Singh, a Mundra farmer.

"When the company came in, we thought our businesses will prosper but slowly the company revealed its true face.

"Initially they gave jobs to the villagers but they soon dismissed those they had employed after they had acquired all the land from the government."

The video, part of a campaign by activist group GetUp, is the latest shot in the increasingly hostile stoush over the development of Australia's biggest coal terminal at Abbot Point on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef.

Adani, the Indian company that is the target of the film, has dismissed it as a deliberate attempt to derail its efforts to develop Australia's largest ever coal mine.

It comes as the government and Labor again blocked moves by the Greens in the Senate on Monday to investigate which companies or individuals control Adani's Carmichael coal and rail project.

The Greens have called for an inquiry into the company's financial affairs after a Fairfax Media investigation raised questions about the ultimate ownership of the Abbot Point development, which has been the subject of fierce opposition from environment lobby groups because of its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef.

GetUp has zoomed in on the Adani's environmental track record in India, which they say both the federal and Queensland governments should have considered before granting approvals to the Indian mining giant.

GetUp commissioned an Indian film crew to document the impact of the company's power plants on the environment and livelihoods of Mundra villagers.

An Adani spokesman said on Monday the videos were a clear campaign to "frustrate Adani's strictly regulated mine, rail and port projects in Queensland" and ignored good work done by the mining giant to support healthcare and education opportunities in India.

Bikka Lal Natubhai, a villager interviewed by PSA Media for the five-minute video, says emissions from coal stacks have affected the community's salt trade since the power plants were set up in 2007.

"The emissions leave black residue on the salt, we are no longer able to get good rates for it in the market," he said.

Zubeida, a fisherwoman, speaks from a hut on the coast, surrounded by her relatives.

"The sea water gets polluted, reducing the fish," she says.

"We don't get any other work.

"The company will not employ our men or us.

"Catching fish in the sea is our work and now the fish has also reduced."

Environmental activists are increasingly targeting the government's decision not to consider Adani's environmental track record in India in their assessment of the company's plans to develop in Australia.

Environmental Justice Australia is challenging Queensland's environmental regulator over why it gave no regard to official reports in India that claimed companies in the Adani group were destroying mangroves, blocking waterways and bribing officials.

Adani Mining has maintained its environmental assessments in Australia have been rigorous and the approvals processes to date have been "the strictest ever handed down by a federal government".

But GetUp senior campaigner Sam Regester said and the organisation's interviews "expose the ugly truth of how Adani does business".

"GetUp will be submitting over eight hours of video evidence gathered in India to the examination being carried out by the Queensland government, and to Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt who has previously chosen not to examine Adani's track record in India."

"The federal and state governments must immediately cancel Adani's licence to operate in Australia. We cannot let this company near our communities, land or our Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area."

But Adani's spokesman said: "This video is part of a clear campaign to attempt to frustrate Adani's strictly regulated mine, rail and port projects in Queensland from proceeding. It's unfortunate that its authors couldn't find the time to chronicle the work of the Adani Foundation in supporting communities with healthcare and education opportunities throughout India."

On top of that, he said it was impossible for the company to confirm the legitimacy of the participants in the film.

He said the company would not be deterred by activist groups determined to "deny jobs, taxes and royalties in Queensland, and energy security in India".

"Adani's mine, rail and port projects in Queensland are the subject of some of the most strict and stringent environmental conditions ever imposed by the Queensland and Commonwealth governments," he said.

"Adani welcomes these environmental protections that balance the need for development with our recognised need to protect the environment - adhering to these strict protections helps build confidence in the communities in which we live and work, and is key to our plan to build a long term future with Queensland."

On Monday, the government and Labor combined to block a motion by the Greens to have Adani's financial affairs in Australia investigated to establish which companies or individuals control the Carmichael development.

The move was prompted by a Fairfax Media investigation that raised questions about the ultimate ownership of the development.

Company documents suggest the company's public face Gautam Adani does not ultimately control many of the companies associated with his company's Australian coal developments. Instead his eldest brother, Vinod Shantilal Adani, holds pivotal positions.

"Why is it so hard for the major parties to support an urgent investigation into which entity owns these massive projects, which are both environmental and climate disasters?" Greens senator Larissa Waters asked on Monday.

Senator Waters criticised the opposition in particular for failing to support the motion, which has been brought to the Senate twice since February "after we changed the wording to accommodate their stated concerns".

"It seems the opposition is just making up excuses about technicalities and the real reason they won't support our motion is because the big mining companies have a hold over Labor, just like they do the government," she said.
