The Hey Tosser campaign has been rolled out across Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven, Eurobodalla and Bega council areas under a NSW EPA Litter Prevention Grant being co-ordinated by the Southern Councils Group.
Southern Councils Group chairman Cr Gordon Bradbery said littering of recreational areas was a constant problem.
"Litter dropped in our streets and on roadsides can be washed into stormwater drains, inevitably polluting our waterways, threatening wildlife and detracting from the beauty of our coastlines, and it is great to see that our community recognises that," he said.
The blitz weekends to date have been very successful with rangers having engaged with more than 1700 residents and visitors.
Handing out car tidy bags and personal cigarette butt bins, rangers found that the public welcomed the initiative.
