The work is due to begin in March.
RMS will be constructing a new 450-metre acceleration lane from the southbound Nungarry Rest Area on the North Kiama bypass section of the Princes Motorway, in order to provide a safer and more efficient exit for vehicles, particularly heavy vehicles.
In order to complete the project safely, the existing southbound lanes will be shifted into the left-hand shoulder during construction and the southbound cycleway will be closed.
Cyclists will be detoured via Riverside Drive.
While Mr Steyer said he appreciated the RMS taking cyclists into consideration while the lane was added, he felt more needed to be done.
“With Riverside Drive already a popular recreational bicycle route, the addition of the suggested bicycle symbols along Riverside Drive will further help promote bicycle awareness along this section of winding road,” Mr Steyer said.
“Our group have contacted the RMS in regard to the issue and hope they will agree to the additional signage.”
He also encouraged cyclists to share the road responsibly.
“Remember that the bicycle symbol PS-2 stencilled in a traffic lane is only to advise road users that cyclists should be anticipated along this section of road.
“The deviation along Riverside Drive as an opportunity to demonstrate co-operation between cyclists and motorists by riding responsibly and in accordance with road rules.”
An RMS spokesman said they had been liaising with Kiama Municipal Council to improve safety.
