Ahead of the March 2 kick-off Samsung, LG, HTC and more (not Apple – it prefers to do its own thing) are expected to unveil brand new mobile wares.

Here's what we know – or suspect – so far, but stay tuned for on-the-ground updates from next week.

1. Samsung: Galaxy S6, Galaxy S Edge, smartwatch

Possibly the most anticipated event at MWC will be Samsung's presser, at which it is expected to unveil two new flagship smartphones: the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S Edge.

The former will be the next iteration of the flagship Galaxy S5, while the latter is expected to incorporate the curved edge display seen on the Galaxy Note Edge phablet.

Some have taken Samsung's invitation material to suggest it will be unveiling a phone in the shape of a fork.

A variety of US mobile carriers this week posted sleek but minimalist marketing from Samsung, which spruiked the S Edge's "six appeal".

The new Galaxys are expected to be full metal jacket – that is, sporting sleek metallic chassis instead of the usual plastic back.

There are quieter whispers that Samsung may also launch a new round-face smartwatch as a follow up to last year's Gear.

In past years it has updated its tablet offerings at the event as well, so keep an eye out for those.

2. LG: Mid-range smartphones, Watch Urbane

Rival South Korean company LG confirmed this week it will showcase four new affordable "mid-range" handsets at MWC: Magna, Spirit, Leon and Joy.

Screen sizes differ for each model, ranging from four to five inches, with the Magna and Spirit sporting subtle curves akin to the LG G Flex 2.

Each line will have two separate handsets for either LTE (4G) or plain old 3G networks. The LTE versions will sport "metal looking" covers while the 3G versions will be decked out in second-class "patterned plastic".

Also on show will be the LG Watch Urbane.

Rumours of a schmancy new LG watch abounded at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, after the mysterious appearance in a promotional Audi video of a watch resembling the one worn by fictional super-spy James Bond.

This looks nothing like that; in fact, LG admits it "follows closely in the footsteps" of the trademark circular LG G Watch R, launched only four months ago.

It sports the same 1.3-inch plastic OLED display but is a bunch sleeker, with a more delicate frame.

3. HTC: One M9, One M9 Plus

HTC has confirmed it will unveil two new smartphones at MWC.

German publication Mobile Geeks has uploaded images of what it says is the HTC One M9, the latest upgrade of the Taiwanese manufacturer's flagship.

Don't expect too much in the way of gimmicky innovations or fork shapes, though – if these pics are anything to go by, the One M9 looks pretty similar to the One M8, but with the requisite spec upgrades.

Meanwhile, HTC's official Twitter account has been busy sending clues about a "big", "huge" reveal – suggesting the company may follow in Apple's footsteps and reveal a phablet version of the One M9 simultaneously.

There have also been plenty of rumours about HTC bringing a smartwatch or smart wristband to the table.

Rumour site Upleaks says it is called Petra, and has published a list of specs and features including three-day battery life, water resistance, remote music and camera control, fitness and sleep tracking, notifications and compatibility with both Android and iOS mobile devices.

4. Sony: Xperia Z4 Tablet

Sony reportedly let slip a preview of its updated tablet on its official Xperia LOUNGE Android app.

The description said the Xperia Z4 features a "stunning 2k display combined with the latest ultra fast processor and industry leading battery performance".

The product specs were promptly wiped from the app, but not before rumourmongers caught the March 3 launch date – smack bang in the middle of MWC.

5. Microsoft: Windows 10, new Lumia

In staunch opposition to Spanish sleeping habits, the US tech giant has scheduled a presser for 8:30 am Monday.

It's unclear as to what it will be about; many are tipping it will expand on how Microsoft's forthcoming Windows 10 operating system will work on mobile, while others predict a new Lumia mobile device or two will be unveiled, probably in the mid-range of the market.

6. Google: Project Ara

Whispers are circling that Google will showcase the Project Ara modular smartphone at this year's MWC.

However the tech giant only unveiled the Spiral 2 prototype last month, saying a Spiral 3 would follow later in the year.
