More than $1 million has been offered across 41 mostly regional council areas in NSW as part of a new Southern Phone Community Grant Scheme, with the program seeing the telecommunications provider support projects in Shellharbour City to the tune of $25,000 this year.
The groups to benefit included Warilla-Barrack Point Surf Club for the relocation and upgrade of their first aid room; Killalea State Park Trust for installation of waste recycling bins; Southern Youth & Family Services for the purchase of a projector for the training room; Oak Flats Junior Soccer Club for construction of a sun shelter; 1st Warilla Scout Club for the purchase and installation of a rubber floor and Koninderie Community Based Pre-School for the refurbishment of its outdoor play area.
The Warilla Scouts group leader Andy Gollop said the funding would mean the installation of playground matting, which would not only make their hall much softer for young scouts, but also warmer in the winter.
"You can imagine with five and six year-olds it's not great to have concrete floors, and the matting will also help insulate the centre as well," Mr Gollop said.
