Then why not get a team together and participate in the 2015 Shell Cove Shellharbour City Festival of Sport Dragon Boat Challenge on Saturday, March 7.

Kevin Callaghan, president of the Shellharbour City Festival of Sport is encouraging everyone to have a go.

"The Dragon Boat Challenge is growing each year and becoming one of the highlights of the Festival of Sport," he said.

The event is open to businesses and community organisations for a fun and rewarding experience, and for others that just want to have fun with their family and friends.

Twenty people with a maximum of 10 males are required.

It costs $25 per person, which includes insurance and training.

The multi-coloured Dragon Boats, along with dragonheads and tails and the full dragon boat experience of pounding drummers and sweeps are provided by Dragon Boats NSW, and includes appropriate training and safety guidelines to ensure a safe challenge.

The region also has its own Illawarra Dragon Boat Club, which is a community-based group open to anyone who may be interested in wielding a paddle.

The Dragon Boaters paddle on Lake Illawarra behind the Illawarra Rowing Centre, Northcliffe Drive, Warrawong.

They will be entering a team in the Dragon Boat Challenge and providing training for the teams.
