Ms Watson announced last week that NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian had promised that the community would be involved in "thorough and rigorous discussions" regarding the station's future.

The station was closed in November to coincide with the opening of the new Shellharbour Junction station.

Ms Watson believes the station is an important part of the area's history.

"It's part of the history of our community and I don't think we should be getting rid of history, which is why I wrote to the minister about its future," she said.

"I'm pleased that the minister has said there will be thorough and rigorous discussions as the community are entitled to have their say on what happens to the station, but I'd still like to know the timetable for those discussions and how they will be carried out."

Ms Watson said many people wished to see the station maintained and had made suggestions about possible future uses for the building.

"The people of Dunmore and Shellharbour don't want to see the station torn down, it's part of the character of the area.

"In fact a number of people have come to me and said why can't it be used as a railway museum or an art gallery or a restaurant."
