In honour of these treasured places, the National Trust's Illawarra Shoalhaven branch has organised a rock pools photo competition.

Snappers of all ages, but especially young people, are being encouraged to take photos of the Illawarra's ocean swimming rock pools, from Coalcliff in the north to Gerringong in the south.

There will be three categories - primary school-aged children, secondary school, and an open section. All have cash prizes.

The photos will be judged by Illawarra Mercury pictorial editor Kirk Gilmour, Red Point Artists president Dulcie Dal Molin and National Trust branch member Andrew Conacher.

Mr Conacher said the competition would celebrate the region's rock pools.

"Some of them are heritage listed and the community really enjoys that resource," Mr Conacher said.

The competition is targeted at schoolchildren but there had also been interest from local camera clubs.

"I'm hoping that with the kids they'll be very creative with the way they use the camera."

The photos will be displayed at Red Point Gallery from March 8 to 14, with the winners announced on March 7.

Entries close on March 4. They must be delivered to the Old Courthouse, 1 Harbour Street, Wollongong. Entry costs $5-$10.
