The course at the western end of Avondale Road at Huntley Hill, West Dapto, will attract plenty of drivers, when Wollongong Sporting Car Club holds its first hillclimb for the 2015, on Sunday, February 1.

The club is in its 62nd year and is one of the oldest Confederation of Australian Motor Sport-affiliated clubs in Australia.

It holds six hillclimbs a year - five club rounds and a round of the NSW Hillclimb Championship.

"A hillclimb is basically a time trial, with one car [racing] at a time," Wollongong Sporting Car Club publicity officer Greg Jones explained.

"Huntley is about 685 metres, it's not long, but it's quite technical. At the startline you get the green light. It's not like a drag race, you don't have to jump straight away.

"You are racing the clock, although there are other competitors in your class. There are six categories for all different types of vehicles, everything from Type 1 and 2 roadgoing cars to full-blown open wheel race cars, like Formula Ones."

Jones said drivers did not need to have "souped up race cars".

"We've had people turn up in their Mazda 6 and compete ... as long as it has a fire extinguisher in it and it meets the scrutineering criteria, you can pretty much race anything."

Type 3 covers modified streetcars, Type 4 includes sports-event class such as V8 Supercars and Type 5 is open-wheel cars. There is also a class for off-road vehicles.

The outright Huntley Hillclimb track record is 18.54sec, held by Sydney driver Tim Edmondson, in a custom-built Gould GR55B.

Jones said they were pushing for juniors (under 21) and women to join the hillclimb.
