The Aerial Patrol spotted a 2.5-metre shark feeding on fish at Werri Beach shortly before 10am.
The Aerial Patrol initially observed a fish shoal north of the Gerringong patrolled surf zone and a closer check of the area revealed a shark among the fish.
Crew requested assistance from the local surf volunteers which resulted in an IRB being deployed to disperse the fish and to move the shark into deeper water away from the main surf area.
It’s been a busy six weeks for the Aerial Patrol, with more than 50m sharks having been observed close to shore and close to popular beaches.
“We can expect to see shark activity close to popular beaches through to March,” Aerial Patrol general manager Harry Mitchell said.
“The beach going public is urged to be alert rather than alarmed and to exercise extreme vigilance for sharks and other potential threats such as rips when swimming at unpatrolled beaches.”
The Aerial Patrol’s daily patrols will revert to weekend patrols from next weekend and conclude on Anzac Day.
