AS it approaches another decade of operation, Jamberoo Action Park is still proving a popular drawcard for the region, with hundreds of thousands of people flowing through the park's gates each operating season.

After opening 35 years ago in 1980 with grass skiing facilities and a chairlift relocated from the Snowy Mountains, the park has grown into a 40-hectare, multimillion-dollar water park that attracts about 350,000 customers each season from September to April.
While the park recently lost its monopoly as the only water park in the state after Wet 'n' Wild Sydney opened in December 2013, Jamberoo Action Park marketing director James Cook said the park is still going strong.
"Of course when a water park like Wet 'n' Wild opens there's probably going to be a dip in numbers, but the way we look at it is that there's been a $130 million dollar investment in the industry and that's something we welcome," Mr Cook said.
"Last year, Australians took 54 million domestic flights and that's because there's more competition and more options in that industry, and it's similar in our industry.
"Wet 'n' Wild targets one million customers per season and we aim for between 350,000 and 400,000.
"If both parks meet those targets that's one million more people making use of water parks each year compared to when we were the only park operating."
While the park is still running strongly, Mother Nature has not been overly friendly for the 2014-15 season. "If you look at December just gone we had six what we call fine-fine days where the weather's fine in the morning and fine in the afternoon, in December 2013 we had 23 fine-fine days," Mr Cook said.
"Despite that we're still having a good season and have days like Australia Day coming up."
By the numbers
■ While the park is open to visitors from 10am-5pm, staff start arriving about 6am to prepare rides and amenities for the day's visitors. After the park closes, staff will then spend another couple of hours cleaning and securing the park.
■ The park averages about 3500 visitors a day during the season, though on busy days that number can be anywhere from 6000-9000 people.
■ The park has 20 full-time staff year-round, and during the season employs about 350 casual employees. About 150 staff members are likely to be working at the park each day.
■ Pools at the park, including the 2.5 million litre wave pool, are vacuumed three times a week.
■ The park has about 90,000 square metres of parking, which is about 3500 spaces.
■ One of the park's biggest attractions, the Taipan, can have up to 2000 people ride it every hour, while up to 600 people go down the Funnel Web each hour.
■ The park sells 33,000 kilograms of hot chips and 56,000 litres of soft drink each season.
■ The park is moving through a four-stage development called Kangaroo Island, which carries a price tag of $60 million.
