More than 70 boys and girls, aged between five and 13 years old, took part in the program at Kiama Library.

Since the program began in 2008, the annual Lego competition has attracted more than 900 children and recent donations by Friends of Kiama Library and the public means the library now has a collection with well in excess of 50,000 pieces.

Library children's officer Sharon Jones said one of the best things about the competition was the number of boys the activity attracted.

"It's always difficult to find things in the library that interest boys - but this one seems to hit the spot," she said.

"Playing with Lego offers children something physical, something imaginative, and something mechanical.

"Promoting play contributes to early literacy development by increasing attention span, memory, creativity, and language and vocabulary skills.

"It also lays the foundation for logical mathematical thinking, scientific reasoning, and problem solving - things children will carry with them throughout their school years."

Chris Fuller, manager development assessment for Kiama Council, selected the winners and said he was impressed by the quality of entries.

After much deliberation six winners were announced - Eleni Michael, Harry Stortz, Joel Mion, Lily Visser, Ella Munro and Callum Cunningham.

Each winner received Lego construction kits.
