At council's October meeting, councillor Mark Way inquired, given the installation of the proposed new optic fibre network facilities to accommodate CCTV, what extra expenditure would be required to add Wi-Fi.
"Would this Wi-Fi system provide coverage to central Kiama including Hindmarsh Park?" he asked.
"Is their capacity within the current works expenditure for the new network to include Wi-Fi installation? (Could) council Wi-Fi be installed at the same time as CCTV to save on costs?"
A report to the December meeting noted that as a major project, the council is currently provisioning a Wide Area Network connecting all council sites on one network.
"The WAN also provides a cost-effective solution for the provision of CCTV and public Wi-Fi by utilising common infrastructure," the report stated.
"Elements of the public Wi-Fi such as cabling and poles have already been incorporated in the WAN/CCTV project implementation."
The outstanding equipment for the completion of stage one of the public Wi-Fi project was the subject of a request for quotation.
Allcom Networks was awarded the contract to install and maintain the Wi-Fi equipment.
"This equipment is to be installed on the poles to be provided for the CCTV network and possibly on existing council buildings," the council report stated.
"The cost of such work can be met from within existing budgets with ongoing annual maintenance and NBN costs in the order of $8000 being considered in future budgets."
Progress on the CCTV network for Kiama's CBD continues, the council due to award the camera supply and installation tender this month. The 20-camera network makes use of the National Broadband Network.
The new infrastructure will also be used for the free Wi-Fi service for Kiama's town centre.
The first stage is the cameras. The second stage is the introduction of Wi-Fi. The cameras will be installed in Terralong Street and Railway Parade.
The second stage will loop back to Terralong Street via Bong Bong and Manning streets.
Council general manager Michael Forsyth was given delegated authority to determine the successful tender.
