Shellharbour brothers Dane, Corey and Beau Chamberlain formed teams which generated a pool of 83 people from Shellharbour who took part in various challenges.
By sporting some stubble the Dane, Corey and Beau Do Movember challenge ended up raising a whopping $44,201 for the global initiative which aims to improve the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems.
The Chamberlain family team project was motivated by a desire to help change the face of men’s health and raise awareness about men health issues.
Dane Chamberlain said it was the second Movember the brothers had taken part in and this year’s response was “overwhelming”.
“We didn’t think we would get the support that we did. Initially we wanted to raise more than last year which was under $18,000, so it was great to get this far,” he said.
“Guys don’t typically feel comfortable talking about that (men’s health) sort of stuff, and we have found that from this, guys have come up and told us they were struggling with depression or a family member has cancer, so it’s really good to be able to get it out in the open.”
In an effort to raise as much money as possible, the group decided to let team members put forward their own challenges to help generate more funds and a wider audience for awareness.
Aside from boarding the “mo-train”, one member shaved off the beard he had been growing for two years, another participant went the entire month with only the left side of a moustache, another went to the final Movember party in women’s clothing and there was a leg wax challenge.
To help raise a bit of extra cash Mark Jones volunteered to have his legs waxed with a goal of raising $500 toward the final amount.
“It was painful, but definitely worth it to raise money for an excellent cause,” Mr Jones said.
“A massive thank you goes out to Dane, Corey and Beau Chamberlain for all of their hard work.
“To raise $44,000 in one month is a phenomenal achievement and a reflection of the great community spirit in Shellharbour.”
