While the Swan Districts midfielder may have been a St Kilda fan, his frustration with the Blues was obvious last season when he took to Twitter to criticise the team's performance against Collingwood in round seven.

"How can Carlton kick 1 goal 5 in a half, disgusting display of footy! The whole Carlton team need to go or Mick does #switchon #AFLPiesBlues," Boekhorst wrote.

The tweet came back to haunt Boekhorst last week when he was the Blues' No.1 pick, and 19th overall, in the national draft.

Boekhorst could have been forgiven for being worried when he fronted coach Mick Malthouse at his maiden training session on Monday, but the veteran mentor was quick to find the funny side in his own mischievous way when Boekhorst asked to chat with him.

"He has new nickname called 'Tweet'," Malthouse said, as he stood next to Boekhorst and introduced the Blues' four draft selections.

Amid a few chuckles from Malthouse, the players and the media, Malthouse elaborated: "He said to me: 'I want to talk to you. Can I talk to you pre-training?'

"I thought: 'No, I would let him cook'. The players haven't missed him - he has gone red."

A slightly embarrassed Boekhorst was a little red in the face but was quick to find the lighter side.

"It's all good fun. He (Malthouse) has taken it pretty good. We will put it behind us, make a laugh out of it - get a good nickname. It's all good," he said.

However, he did admit to some nervousness after his name was called out by the Blues on the Gold Coast.

"It's not the best thing to go into a club (with). I guess it's a good little icebreaker for the boys," he said.

"I think Tweeter might stick for a while. It's a good little nickname."

The Blues, who have overhauled their list in the past two years, have rejected suggestions there was a risk in taking Boekhorst because of his age. At 21, he was the only mature-aged player secured in the draft.

"You just pick the best player available for our needs. It didn't matter about age," Malthouse said.

"At the end of the day, I would like to think 18-year-olds can play senior football but, the reality is, it's such a learning curve. We have got Blaine who has played senior footy in Perth.

"Clem (Smith) has played senior footy in Perth. I think kids who have played senior football come over with an advantage anyway, at least for 12 months until the young kids from Victoria who play under-18 football get that senior football, generally in the VFL.

"We are not worried about the ages - it's a matter of getting the best player, the best person, (we are) very particular about getting good people as well."

Boekhorst has already made it clear his intention is to press for senior selection against Richmond in next year's season opener.

He hopes to provide midfield speed and "someone who can break the lines and use the ball long to our forwards".

The Blues also unveiled Smith, a defender from Western Australia, Dillon Viojo-Rainbow, also a defender, and forward Jayden Foster, the son of former Western Bulldog Peter Foster.
