The council will host the free event featuring the US documentary as part of its campaign to encourage the phasing out of plastic bags.
The Bag It - Living Plastic Free project was initiated in Shellharbour Village and Shell Cove to reduce the amount of plastics that end up in landfill and the initiative will be rolled out to include other business districts in Oak Flats and Albion Park.
Mayor Marianne Saliba said soft plastics were harmful to the environment.
"Plastic bags require precious resources to make and then are often tossed in the bin after just one use," Cr Saliba said.
"Through educational programs, we are encouraging people to either avoid using plastic bags or reuse them multiple times before disposal," she said.
The film exposes the effects of plastic bags and other plastic consumer merchandise on ecosystems, the marine environment and the human body.
Environmentalist and co-founder of the Plastic Bag Free NSW campaign, Tim Silverwood, will speak at the movie event.
Mr Silverwood is co-founder of Take 3, director of ReChusable and winner of the 2014 Green Globe Award for the NSW Sustainability Champion.
He is also an ambassador for Keep Australia Beautiful, was a finalist in the 2013 Pride of Australia Awards and a spokesman for the Boomerang Alliance campaigning for better recycling.
Mr Silverwood lends his skills to many projects around the world striving to reduce the impacts of waste on the environment.
■ The screening will be held 6pm-9pm, December 18, at the Roo Theatre, Shellharbour Village.
The event will also include global street food, provided by the Red Kitchen from 6pm.
