Our council is particularly good at finding new ways to encourage everyone to recycle and reuse rather than throw away.
The new reverse vending machine at Stockland Shellharbour's food court is an excellent example, and - thanks to the support of store management - a reward is offered for every bottle and aluminium can that is put into the machine.
Education is also a large part of what we do to assist people with ways to cut down on what goes in the red lid bin - from Earthworks courses about composting to visiting classrooms and explaining the benefits of using less plastic and giving away Tupperware containers to children to help make it easier for the parents to avoid using sandwich bags and plastic wrap.
We are now preparing to host a screening of the US documentary, Bag It: Is Your Life Too Plastic? which exposes the effects of plastic bags and other plastic merchandise on land ecosystems, marine environment and the human body.
It is free and will be held 6pm-9pm on Thursday, December 18, at the Roo Theatre in conjunction with our Bag It - Living Plastic Free initiative.
This involves encouraging the phasing out of single-use plastic bags from businesses within Shellharbour, starting at Shellharbour Village and Shell Cove.
Driving workshop
Parents of learner drivers are invited to join a free, two-hour workshop with practical advice about supervising, completing the log book and providing on-road driving advice.
It will be held at 6pm on Monday at the council chambers ground floor, Lamerton House, Shellharbour City Council. Call Jenny Davies on 4221 6124 to reserve a place.
Citizen entries
There is still time to nominate any resident of Shellharbour City who have contributed to the community through volunteering, acts of compassion, generosity or bravery for the Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year awards.
Each person nominated will be invited to our Australia Day Dinner and enjoy some fine dining at this annual celebration of our community.
Information and forms are available on council's website.
Business network
The Shellharbour City Business Network is having another double-header this month.
IRIS's Simon Pomfret will be at The Links Shell Cove on November 19 to talk about the changing local business environment as well as provide an overview of the Australian and Illawarra economies, and discuss business trends and possible opportunities, especially for small business.
The next day, a half-day presentation will take place for small businesses.
