A keen sprinter and hurdler, the eight-year-old St Paul's Albion Park student can now lay claim to being one of the fastest NSW primary school students in her age group over 100 metres after a noteworthy showing at the New South Wales Primary Schools Sports Association (NSWPSSA) Primary Athletics Championships earlier this month.
"It's been a pretty busy time for her recently, but she's done really well and we're proud of her efforts," Delta's mother Becky Amidzovski said.
"To get to the PSSAs is quite an effort, she won the 100 metres at school and then went on to win it at the Wollongong Diocese carnival as well.
"From there she made the trials for the Mackillop team and was successful in making the team and then won the 100 metres at the Mackillop Championships, which got her into the PSSAs."
With the Mackillop Championships including schools from the Dioceses of Wollongong, Sydney, Canberra, Parramatta and Wagga Wagga, Delta's performance at the championships was quite an achievement.
"There's a lot of the bigger schools at the Mackillop Championships, so it's pretty good for Delta, for somebody from one the smaller schools to win it," Mrs Amidzovski said.
While she didn't take the state title at the NSWPSSA championships, there was still plenty of positives to take from Delta's performance.
"The PSSAs is all primary schools from across the state, not just Catholic schools, so third is a great achievement and she also ran a personal best of 15.33 seconds which was great," Mrs Amidzovski said.
With the National Championships not available to competitors under the age of 10, Delta will have to wait for a couple of years for further honours, but her coach, Rick Watkins, believes she has what it takes.
"She's going pretty good, she's only small and for her to compete and beat bigger girls like she does is impressive," he said.
"She's got the right attitude and if she keeps training like she does and keeps improving like she has been, then I think she'll go far."
