Toward The Crimson Sky will take place at Wollongong Town Hall on November 1 from 8pm.
The thunderous drumming of the Japanese taiko drums combine with the hypnotic melodies of shakuhachi and shinobue bamboo flutes, voice and a rare performance on the bass koto, a traditional Japanese 17-stringed instrument, by guest artist Satsuki Odamura.
Written by TaikOz artistic director Ian Cleworth, Toward The Crimson Sky is based on a haiku by Japanese poet Miura Yuzuru, and it evokes the poem's sensual, dramatic and often playful imagery of a cloud of dragonflies ascending into a deep red sky.
TaikOz is touring the new work throughout regional Australia, displaying all the elements the group are famous for - hypnotic rhythms and adrenalin-fuelled performances that are not just for the ears and eyes, but are felt throughout the entire body.
The group have been around for 18 years and blend traditional Japanese taiko with contemporary musical compositions.
The concert also features two new works by TaikOz members Tom Royce-Hampton (Solace) and Anton Lock (Exploration).
Solace is quiet, reflective and melodious and Exploration is rhythmic and energetic, featuring virtuosic playing from Graham Hilgendorf on drums.
Crowd favourite Ota.i.ko, a fast-paced work, returns. Tickets range from $53 to $63.
