In a bid to diversify its revenue streams and attract customers, News Corp Australia investment publication Eureka Report will establish a platform that will allow people to administer their super funds.

The product, named BrightDay, is being developed by James Leplaw, the general manager of Eureka Report. A launch is planned for December.

Eureka Report editor-in-chief Alan Kohler said the move was about "better serving existing customers and possibly getting more".

News Corp Australia is working with the newly listed investment and administration platform operator OneVue on the super wrap, which will enable customers to buy stocks and units in managed funds and make other transactions.

Fees have not been disclosed, but Mr Kohler said they would be low to encourage people with low balances to set up a self-managed super fund or gradually move into one.

Eureka Report has changed tack. It has obtained an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) and hired analysts to provide explicit buy and sell advice to subscribers.

Co-founders and veteran journalists Alan Kohler and James Kirby also have become qualified securities advisers.

Eureka Report already has a joint venture with fund manager Clime Asset Management to provide access to Clime's valuation tool.

Australian Independent Business Media, publisher of business site Business Spectator and the Eureka Report, was bought by News Corp in June 2012 for $30 million in an offer, Mr Kohler told staff, its owners "couldn't refuse".

Eureka Report was seven years old at the time of sale and had 15,500 subscribers, generating the bulk of AIBM's reported $8.84 million revenue.

Investment media is considered attractive due to readers' willingness to pay for content. Australia's pool of self-managed super is enormous.

But the market for investment newsletters is crowded and Eureka Report subscriber numbers are believed to have fallen.

Leaked News Corp Australia figures for the year to June 2013 showed Business Spectator and Eureka Report cost the company $2.5 million, despite AIBM's revenue being $3.5 million.

AIBM was owned by Kohler, an ABC finance host and a former Australian Financial Review editor, Kirby, veteran business reporters Stephen Bartholomeusz and Robert Gottliebsen, Private Media chairman Eric Beecher and businessmen Mark Carnegie and John Wylie.

Messrs Kohler, Gottliebsen, Kirby and Bartholomeusz have continued at News.

Morgans analyst Ivor Ries said media companies these days had "five or six side ventures" to try to diversify revenue. He said he was not aware of any other major media companies selling financial products.

Few non-financial services companies have made money out of selling financial services.

Fairfax Media, publisher of The Australian Financial Review, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, last year sold InvestSmart, a product that provided cheaper access to funds through providing a rebate to the customer.
