Open to surfers aged six through to 14, competitors from across the state were treated to quality three-foot waves for the preliminary stages of the event on Saturday, before making the most of some tricky one-footers for the finals on Sunday.
In the under-14 boys, Kiama’s Chae Conti continued his good form in the competition, joining the round one winners’ list along with Darcy Piltz (Budgewoi), Keanu Miller (Bulli), Jay Brown (Lilli Pilli), Gabe Ley (Narrabeen), Jackson Roberts (Bateau Bay), Fin McLauren (Austinmer) and Tye Koolis (Maroubra).
Miller got the wave of the day, with an impressive 9.33 ride.
On the girls’ side of the draw, Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon) was the standout performer, notching up heat wins across the under-12 and under-14 divisions.
Not to be outdone, Cedar’s sister, Bodhi, also managed to take a convincing win in the under-14 girls, posting an impressive heat total of 14.17.
In the under-14 boys’ final, Bateau Bay’s Jackson Roberts posted a score of 10.67, which proved enough to knock off Jay Brown (Lilli Pilli), Keanu Miller (Bulli) and Beau Buckpitt (Culburra) who finished in second, third and fourth respectively.
Bodhi Leigh-Jones produced some quality rides to post a combined score of 13.84 that saw her take out the under-14 girls’ title, while sister Cedar took out the under-12 girls’ title ahead of Stanwell Park’s Kasey Hargreaves .
Central Coast surfers Nate Hopkins (Lake Munmorah) and Hughie Vaughan (Bateau Bay) fought a tight battle in the under-10 boys with both surfers trading off a series of impressive scores. However, Hopkins’ lightning-fast backhand belts were the determining factor in his victory.
Kiahni Scott (Collaroy) was victorious in the under-10 girls, beating Keira Buckpitt (Culburra) and Jada Thomas (Barrack Point).
Dayan Conti (Kiama) ensured the under-8 title remained in Kiama when he took out the parent-assist division. Conti managed to lock in a solid eight-point wave score (out of a possible 10 points) to get the edge over his fellow finalists.
