Instead of dumping buckets of ice water on one another, the Rock 4 Regal charity concert will use music to join the fight against the disease.  

Flinders  man Adam Regal was diagnosed with MND in late 2013 aged 30.

His father and uncle died of MND when they were  in their 50s.

It is a terminal neurological disease that causes death between one and five years after diagnosis.

Former Kiama Downs resident Den Murray, who now lives in Melbourne, has teamed up with Regal to run the Rock 4 Regal show in Kiama, which will raise funds for the motor neurone research team at Macquarie University. 

The bands performing are all Illawarra artists who will be giving up their own time and talents for the cause.

Performers include Furious Monk, Sentient, Crash Tragic (bass player Paul Ditton is Mr Regal’s brother-in-law), Fires Were Started and The Conspiracy Plan. 

Murray, who will be drumming for Fires Were Started on the night, said former Kiama resident Regal had been a long-time family friend.

‘‘I talked to Adam about doing it, and it was before the ice bucket challenge hype started,’’ he said.

‘‘Come to this ...  you don’t have to get wet, and still have a good night.’’ 

Murray said pre-sale tickets had been selling strongly and he hoped to at least break $2000 raised. The range of bands playing – covering a range of genres  – would provide quality entertainment.

‘‘It’s a fairly diverse night of music,’’ he said. 

Raising awareness is also a priority for Murray.

‘‘I wanted to put it on to raise money for research, but also to give Adam a good night and remind him all his mates are behind him.

‘‘I knew his father died from it, but I was unaware what the disease was, or really understand it until Adam got it.

‘‘When it hit Adam, it hit closer to home.’’

Rock 4 Regal is on Friday, October 24 at Kiama Leagues Club auditorium.
