Now he is celebrating 50 years behind the wheel as a driver for Cleary Bros.
The anniversary at Cleary Bros last month marked 55 years behind the wheel of semi trailers for the 76-year-old.
"I started out as a fitter and turner, but then I had a pretty bad motorbike accident, and when I came back to work I couldn't stand up at the lathe all day any more because of my banged up leg," Mr Stewart said.
"I'd had a fair few friends who had got into truck driving and seemed to enjoy it, so I thought I'd give it a go and I've been doing it ever since."
Mr Stewart worked for himself for a couple of years before joining Cleary Bros and has never regretted the decision to join the company.
"They've always treated me well; the past couple of weeks they've treated me even better," Mr Stewart said. "But the whole time they've been really good to me and it's been a great place to work.
"I've thought a bit about retirement and I guess it's probably something that's coming up in the next few years, but I'm still enjoying working here."
