At last night's ordinary meeting, the council resolved to cease collecting computers and televisions from Sunday, October 5, due to the end of the service provider contract.
In April this year a company was contracted to collect e-waste for free under the Federal Television and Computer Product Stewardship Scheme for a minimum period of 18 months.
Since then, more than 74 tonnes of electronic items have been disposed of at the site.
Early in September the company advised that it had reached its allowable limit and was forced to cease to provide this service in Shellharbour City from September 30.
Council voted to cover the cost of providing the service until close of business, on Sunday, October 5 and after that date, no e-waste will be collected at the Dunmore waste site unless another provider could be found.
Mayor Marianne Saliba said it was unfortunate the service would not be available locally due to circumstances outside of council’s control, but every effort would be made to have it reinstated.
‘‘We will extend the provision of this free service for an extra week to try to reduce the impact this decision has on our residents," Cr Saliba said.
Cr Peter Moran expressed concerns about an increase in illegal dumping.
Cr Marsh voted against the motion and called for council to extend the date for another week - October 12.
The general manager said it would cost council $5000 for every week following the September 30 cut off date.
The closest alternative location for the disposal of e-waste is in Wollongong and a list of current sites is available through Planet Ark.
