Gerroa's Fitzgibbons currently sits in the No.1 spot with 57,900 points, but Wright is hot on her heels only 1700 points behind.
Wright jumped into second place after denying Fitzgibbons the chance to defend her Roxy Pro title in Hossegor, France, last week, knocking out the world ranking leader during their quarter-final.
Wright would go on to win the event, defeating American Courtney Conlogue in the final to jump from fourth to second in the world rankings, overtaking Carissa Moore and Stephanie Gilmore.
Fitzgibbons would have been confident going into the quarter-final after she earned a direct qualification from the heat stages.
However, Wright took control early on her way to her second title this year.
The quarter-final was a tight affair and despite being on the backfoot early, Fitzgibbons managed to force a number of lead-changes in the dying stages, but couldn't claw her way back as Wright won 12.53-12.24.
Wright would go on to beat France's Johanne Defay in the semi-final to set up a meeting with Conlogue.
Wright was in complete control throughout the final as she produced four nine-point rides on her way to a comfortable victory, 19.20-12.43.
"That was one of the best finals I've ever been in wave-wise, it wasn't a wave-catching contest, it was a wave-riding contest and that's the way I love to surf," Wright said after her win.
The tour now moves on to the Cascais Women's Pro in Portugal, which is set to start this week.
