Mental Health Month takes place in October each year, and aims to be a reminder to reflect on our own mental health and that of those around us. It also seeks to help break down the stigma associated with mental health issues, and promote conversations surrounding these issues.
This year's theme is "be YOUnique!", promoting acceptance and understanding of the impact that being proud of who we are can have on our well-being.
In accordance with Mental Health Month, North Kiama Neighbourhood Centre, along with a variety of welfare and community groups from throughout Kiama and the Illawarra, have organised an event this month.
Beat The Blues will take place on Saturday, October 11, from 11am-4pm at Hindmarsh Park, Kiama. It will feature live bands, information stalls, showbags and more.
Neighbourhood Centre residential volunteer Ven Andrews said the event was an opportunity for the community to combine for an enjoyable, informative day.
"The whole theme (of Mental Health Month) is about healthy minds, happiness, understanding and acceptance," she said.
"The theme is be yourself, and be proud of who you are.
"As a community we're all individuals, and individual people make up a unique community.
"The response I have got from the young people in this community has been exceptional regarding the event, what it's about and how they want to be more aware of mental health."
