IT seems somewhat strange to be talking about Australia Day in October. Our thoughts at this time are often preoccupied with plans for the remainder of the year, then Christmas and New Year celebrations.

But Australia Day nominations are open now, and this is your opportunity to recognise the people in our community who make this a great place.
Last year we celebrated a veterans' volunteer, a surfing champion, an arts advocate and a SES leader.
We rely on you to nominate locals who deserve to be recognised for their contribution to our community spirit.
The categories are: Citizen of the Year; Young Citizen of the Year; Sports Awards and Community Arts Award.
On Australia Day, we also celebrate our Kiama Council Achievement Awards which are for: Service to the Environment; Community Achievement Award and Youth Achievement Award.
Nominations close on November 28 and forms are available at kiama.nsw.gov.au. Printed copies are available from our administration centre or by phoning 4232 0444.
Also a reminder that Kiama Council's Music in the Park is on this Sunday from 1pm to 3.30pm.
This is an initiative funded by council and supported by DamicoSound.
Enjoy listening to music on the hill in Hindmarsh Park, overlooking the park and gorgeous Kiama Harbour.
This Sunday the line-up is: 1pm Rose Amongst Thorns - Classic '70s and '80s rock; 1.45pm Cat Walk City - Jazz, western swing, country and rock; 2.45pm Big Blues Party.
So grab a picnic blanket and bring the family along for a fun afternoon.
