At least once a month Lake Illawarra Local Area Command officers and Shellharbour City Council safety officer Megan Martinez-Smith hold a Community Pop-Up stall to meet residents and address various concerns.
LILAC community safety officer, Sergeant Jason Harrison said stalls gave the force the opportunity to directly engage with the community throughout the region.
"It's a voice for the community and another way of connecting, through an initiative that is driven by local council," he said.
"It is a real positive thing and move towards active crime prevention.
"It gives us structure and, while sometimes we focus on a national theme, we are more centred on local issues."
Ms Martinez-Smith said the stalls were held monthly at various locations through the local government area.
"We provide safety information, fact sheets and talk to residents about the best way they can report to police and to us," she said.
"We also address issues that residents present to us at each of the stall locations. From that we can identify a crime hotspot area, or a specific area of concern, such as graffiti, and then hold a stall at that location and directly address that particular community.
"It has proven to be an effective way to address those community concerns and also help people know when it is a council or a police issue."
