Set in the 1970s at a London Hospital during Christmas, the story follows Dr David Mortimer, who is meticulously preparing his address for the Ponsonby lecture, in the expectation of fame and a knighthood.
Before long, his rehearsal takes an unexpected turn and the comedic drama unfolds as a cast of 10 introduce 12 unique characters all consumed by their own reality.
Dr Mortimer finds himself lodged in a fierce and fast-paced farce as he tries to hush an old lover, conceal an illegitimate son on the frantic search for his father, a social-climbing wife, a drunk Sir Willoughby Drake and a somewhat slow best friend, Dr Hubert Booney, from ruining his one chance at stardom.
Play director and actor Nick Higgins said the playwright, Ray Cooney, was known for his ability to weave a story of characters, lies and themes into chaos that was fast paced, clever and funny.
"It just becomes lies upon lies and turns into an absolute farce," he said. "The audience watch on and see it all unfold and the only people that know the truth is the audience and Dr Hubert.
"The production is very cleverly written and the characters really complement each other. The very first time I read the script, I read it alone and I was laughing out loud."
The play hits the stage on October 3 and runs until October 18 at Roo Theatre, Shellharbour.
