More than 3000 people attended the Newcastle Gold Cup yesterday and Newcastle Jockey Club chief executive Cameron Williams said he couldn’t have asked for better weather to top the day off.
“Everything is booked, function rooms and restaurants,” he said. “It’s very upbeat and there is an air of genuine excitement about today’s racing, everyone is on a high.”
One of the most fashionable couples of the day was Merewether’s Besna and Zoran Kirkovski.
“I was inspired by the beautiful spring season and all the gorgeous flowers that are in season at the moment, so I had to do floral,” Mrs Kirkovski said. “I’m not a horse-goer at all, for me it’s all about having some yummy food and a glass of wine.
“I just saw Gai Waterhouse and she looked amazing, a picture of beauty.’’
Another attendee, Stephanie Russell, who wore a green dress, proved it wasn’t necessary to spend big to look good.
“My mum bought my dress for me about five years ago, so I guess you could say it’s the vintage look,” she said.
“The oysters are fresh, the champagne has just popped – the day has been amazing.”
Bookmaker Grant Lynch said the punting had been steady throughout the day.
“There is a very pleasing crowd this year. The secret to being a successful punter is to be patient and measured.”
