The mayor normally holds office for 12 months, with an election held in September each year, while council policy has been to formally elect a deputy mayor each year.
Incumbent mayor Brian Petschler was elected unopposed in 2012 and 2013.
Cr Petschler said while he hadn’t actively campaigned, he believed he had enough support to retain the position.
‘‘I think the council operates pretty effectively together,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ll put my hand up and see what happens.’’
In 2012, after 17 years on council, veteran Kiama councillor Warren Steel realised his long-held ambition to be deputy mayor.
Last year, Cr Steel decided against renominating for the position.
Cr Neil Reilly was elected to the role last year.
Cr Reilly won with six votes, ahead of Cr Andrew Sloan on two votes and Mark Way with one vote.
Cr Reilly said he would be standing for the deputy role again, and supported Cr Petschler for mayor.
Cr Way also said he planned to run for deputy mayor, his third tilt at the role.
Cr Way also said he supported the current mayor.
‘‘I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t get unanimous support,’’ he said. ‘‘Brian has done a great job.’’
Cr Steel told the Kiama Independent he planned to run for the deputy role, but Cr Sloan said he did not intend to do so.
