The trial is open to households in the municipality who currently pay the domestic waste management fee and allows each household to dispose of one load of bulky waste, no bigger than two cubic metres, for free at the Minnamurra Recycling Centre.
The trial will run from 8am-4pm from September 1-14 and households must make a booking before taking their waste to the recycling centre.
Kiama Municipal Council waste management officer Josephine St John said the trial was aimed at helping the council decide if there was a better approach to collecting bulky household waste than the annual kerbside collection.
"The kerbside collection is our way of collecting bulky waste at the moment, but it's an expensive activity. It limits what people can put out, it has some health and safety issues, and aesthetic issues as well," Ms St John said.
"The trial we're offering will allow people to bring things like mattresses, e-waste and white goods along and also allows us to separate the waste and reduce the amount that goes to landfill. In the kerbside collection the only thing we recover is steel and the rest goes to landfill."
Ms St John said the council hoped by allowing rural and paying households to participate in the trial incidents of illegal dumping would be reduced. Bookings are essential and can be made via kiama.nsw.gov.au or by calling 4232 0444.
