A member of the Gerringong Rural Fire Brigade, Mr Jenkins has put the dreadlocks he has been cultivating for the past 6½ years on the line as part of a World's Greatest Shave event organised by Illawarra firefighters.

"My last haircut would have been about 10 years ago, the dreadlocks have been going for about the last 6½," 35-year-old Mr Jenkins said.

"I've had dreadlocks before, but I never planned to grow them for this long this time. I had a bit of a vague idea when I started growing my hair and now I've ended up with them for this long."

Mr Jenkins put conditions on whether he'll lose his locks or not.

"It's a good cause [Leukaemia Foundation] and I thought I'd be able to help out and raise some money if I put my hand up, so I said they'll come off if I raise $1000.

Mr Jenkins confirmed he has reached the threshold and the dreadies will be going.

The fact that he's raising money for a good cause has helped Mr Jenkins come to terms with losing his hair.

"It's going to be a big change for sure, it's been a long time since I've had short hair and I'm a little bit worried about how it's going to look, but at the end of the day it's for a good cause.

"The other things is that they can get a bit annoying, they're heavy and they take ages to dry, so maybe the time has come for them to come off."

Mr Jenkins will be among a number of Illawarra area firefighters participating in the World's Greatest Shave event at Stocklands Shellharbour on Saturday, August 23, from 11am-2pm.
