IN light of the recent Malaysian Airlines disaster, the next Friends of Kiama Library event, on August 2, will take on extra significance when Gerringong author Jim Eames speaks of his lifetime of experience in the aircraft industry.

Eames, who was born in Albury in 1939, is considered one of the country's most experienced aviation experts, staring his career as a journalist with the Border Morning Mail in Albury in the 1960s.
Later he worked for the Melbourne Sun News Pictorial and spent several years in Papua New Guinea as editor of the New Guinea Times Courier, before joining the Australian Department of Civil Aviation as its director of public relations.
In 1975 he became the chief press officer at Qantas and later the airline's director of public affairs.
Eames will be talking about his recent book Taking to the Skies: hijackers, heroes and daredevils, Australian flying stories from the Catalina to the Jumbo.
The talk will begin at 2.30pm in Kiama Family History Centre and everyone is welcome. Afternoon tea will be provided. Donations are $5 for members and $8 for visitors.
