Adventure, drama, comedy and love ensue in Opera Australia's new Indiana Jones-inspired production showing at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre (IPAC) on August 8-9.
In this spirited Egyptian adventure, 12 professional Opera Australia singers perform under the baton of conductor Simon Kenway, and will be accompanied by a local children's chorus featuring a select group of students from the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music.
The Magic Flute follows the journey of two young couples whose love and friendships are tested. As the tale unfolds, hero Prince Tamino receives a magic flute from the Queen of the Night and sets out to rescue her daughter Pamina from an evil priest.
Acclaimed Australian writer/director Michael Gow describes The Magic Flute as a timeless story of a hero in search of adventure.
"It's a sort of classic quest, really," Gow said.
"We have a young man who wants to find true love. But he's got it all the wrong way around, and has to deal with his own ego. So much of this opera is about letting go of what you want, and finding a way to meet people halfway."
Retaining the music and storyline of Mozart's original, references to movies like The Mummy and Indiana Jones ensure The Magic Flute's wide appeal.
