The program involves 21 child care centres and their families working to improve centre environmental sustainability. Since it began in 2013, more than 900 people have participated in program events and inspired child care centres to organise 100 sustainability initiatives to reduce their environmental impacts. More than 80 sustainability-based activities have been delivered to the children.

‘‘Issues of waste, water and energy consumption, sustainable food production and biodiversity conservation within child care centres and households are addressed through this innovative program,’’ Cr Saliba said.
Keep NSW Beautiful runs the Sustainable Cities Awards to recognise outstanding achievements for the environment and sustainability in urban communities.
The program aims to address waste minimisation, water and energy consumption, biodiversity conservation and sustainable food production within childcare centres and households, with a specific focus on engaging with centres and families from low socio-economic areas.
CEO of Keep NSW Beautiful, David Imrie, said Shellharbour council was an example of the kind of innovative enterprise that drove sustainability in NSW communities now and into the future.
“We’re impressed with the leadership shown by entries in this year’s program. The calibre of entrants is a testament to the ability of NSW communities rising to the challenge of building a more sustainable future for our state,” he said.
The Awards were presented at a ceremony on Friday, July 18, at Concord Golf Club in the city of Canada Bay, which won the Overall award last year.
