I WRITE in support of the frustration of Lorraine Harrison (Kiama Independent, July 2) with Kiama Council and its bloody-minded adherence to its tree preservation order.

A large eucalypt that I planted in my backyard some 15 years ago now threatens a recent extension and our neighbours' fences and properties.
Two separate applications to council were met with steadfast refusals despite repeated follow-up protest letters.
Council justification for refusal is meaningless as it cannot prove structural integrity of any tree, or that it is not a danger, as is clearly demonstrated in Lorraine's case.
Council should not be able to refuse the removal of any tree on private property where the owner has reasonable grounds to fear damage to property or persons from collapse of that tree.
Because of Kiama Council's attitude to trees ratepayers will continue to bear the cost of damage while council carries no liability; all the while collecting our application fees. Not good enough, Kiama.
