The name will be up for public consultation from July 18 to August 18.

The two previously proposed names, Shell Cove and Flinders, had previously been rejected by the GNB.

The GNB said they investigate and determine the form, spelling, meaning, pronunciation, origin and history of any geographical name, and determine the application of each name with regard to position, extent or other reference.

Chair of GNB Board Des Mooney said it was important for the board to consult with the community on the proposed name.

“We encourage the community to comment on the proposal before the board considers adopting the Transport for NSW proposal,” he said.

“Residents are invited to lodge submissions with the GNB by Monday, August 18.”

Earlier this week, Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson said any attempt to come to a consensus on a name had been “dashed” after Kiama MP Gareth Ward pulled out of discussion.  

“Unfortunately, Mr Ward has rejected any hope of a naming consensus by refusing to be involved in any discussions or be part of a joint submission to the GNB,” Ms Watson said.

“This is especially disappointing given this whole controversy was sparked by Mr Ward unilaterally announcing the new station would be named ‘Shell Cove’ last February.

“I also proposed that if a consensus position could be achieved that we lodge a formal joint submission with the GNBNSW during the public exhibition of its own recommended proposal of ‘Shellharbour Junction’.”
