The 2003 bushfires that swept through Canberra’s suburbs had a profound psychological impact on those living here at the time. Even if their property wasn’t one of the ones to go, a native Canberran will instinctively tense at the hint of smoke. The scars take a long time to heal, and although you can plant an Arboretum and nurture new beginnings, your mind’s eye will see our beautiful pine forests burned to a cinder, our hills looking like the gates of Mordor.
