Easy win for University against Wests

UNIVERSITY have further enhanced their position in the Illawarra hockey league, easily beating Wests Illawarra 7-0 at the University turf on Sunday.

What was expected to be a close affair turned out to be an easy win for the students, with Simon Beaton returning to the line-up and leading his team to a good win.

With Wests missing a number of players through injury, Wests coach Scott Matthews had to take the field and later conceded defeat to a more organised team with more substitutes to call on.

The students took a 3-0 half-time lead through Corey Harding, Joe Plumb and Cam Dean and added another four goals in the second half through Beaton, Cameron Parsons, Corey Harding and captain Heath Ogilvie.

At Unanderra, Dapto received another hockey lesson from premiers Albion Park, who beat them 10-1 with five goals from Bede Gillard, a double from Jason Kast and Brady Anderson and final goal from third grader Jason Collett.

Jack Donovan gave Robertson a 1-0 win over Mittagong.

Illawarra clinched the NSW State Over-40s title at Newcastle, beating Sydney 2-0 in a tough final; goals came from David Rieck and Jon Marr.

In the semi-final Illawarra beat Parkes 2-1 in a close match, with goals from Rieck and Brent Wilsmore. In the pool matches, after an early loss to Newcastle 2-0, the team regrouped to beat Orange 2-0, Far North Coast 1-0 and Macarthur 3-0 to place second in their pool and take a spot in the semis.
